Haemophilia Centres Issue Guidance on COVID Vaccine

Guidance for patients with bleeding disorders

The below statement was issued by Scotland’s Haemophilia Centres on 28 January 2021.

“With the ongoing pandemic, we are aware that many of you may be anxious at this time.

We are also aware that there has recently been some information in the media with regards to the COVID-19 vaccine and patients with bleeding disorders, that may have caused further concern and confusion.

So we want to reassure you that patients with bleeding disorders can safely receive the vaccine.

The Vaccine has to be administered intramuscularly and cannot be given subcutaneously (just under the skin). Therefore some patients may require treatment prior to the injection. The Haemophilia Centres will not be administering the COVID-19 Vaccine.

The Haemophilia Centres are here to offer advice and we will be contacting some patients by telephone to discuss with them whether they require treatment for their bleeding disorder prior to the vaccine. However if you have not been contacted by your haemophilia centre and have any queries or need advice, please call and speak to your centre during working hours and they will be happy to help you.”
