Living with a bleeding disorder can impair mobility, employability, financial stability, overall health and participation in daily life. Our work supports those diagnosed to:
- Reduce levels of anxiety and enable better coping mechanisms
- Increase confidence to manage their condition and live the way they want
- Reduce members financial vulnerability through improved levels of knowledge and better access to information
- Build friendships and a peer network who they can rely on for emotional support
What our members say who have attended our events:

Our Financial Wellbeing Service
We provide a free Welfare Benefits Service for Haemophilia Scotland members, delivered by our Financial Wellbeing Officer, Maxie Cobern‑Burke. The service ensures that anyone living with or affected by a bleeding disorder can access the financial support they are entitled to.
What the service offers:
- Benefits checks: Identifying any missing entitlements to maximise income.
- Support with applications: Guidance and hands‑on help completing benefit forms, which can often be complex and overwhelming.
- Help with appeals: Assistance with reconsiderations and appeals for unsuccessful claims, including speaking directly with Social Security Scotland or the DWP on behalf of members.
- Income maximisation: Budgeting support and signposting to debt advice where needed.
This service strengthens financial security for our community, reduces stress for families, and ensures no one misses out on essential support.
What our members say about our Financial Wellbeing Service
Maxie and this service have been absolutely life changing for me. I have two boys with severe haemophilia A, and at the time I reached out my marriage was broke down. I felt completely alone, frightened about how I could support my children and keep a roof over our heads.
When I came to Maxie, she immediately stepped in to help. She worked out all the benefits I was entitled to, sent me the information clearly, and reassured me that she would support me with any forms if I needed it. Because of her help, I was able to access everything me and my boys were entitled to. This meant we could stay in our home and live much more comfortably. I honestly could not have done it without her. Without Maxie, I know I wouldn’t be receiving half the support I am today. She has made such a huge difference to our lives, and I will be forever thankful. As for improvements, I can’t think of any—my experience was nothing but positive.
