Christmas can be a time when payments don’t stretch as far as they usually do. There are many charities who are helping those who are struggling this winter:
The set free project in Glasgow are providing a Christmas dinner for families and individuals who are struggling to afford a proper Christmas dinner. They are also distributing toys to children whose parents are unable to afford presents this Christmas.
The Salvation Armyare giving Christmas food parcels to families who are struggling to afford a proper Christmas lunch and distributing toys to children whose parents are unable to afford presents this Christmas.
Food banks are nationwide and can offer a food parcel with a referral from any of these agencies:
- Citizens Advice: They’ll assess your situation and provide a referral.
- Local Council: Contact them for local food banks and potential support from the Scottish Welfare Fund.
- Social Workers/Child’s School: If you have one, they can provide referrals.
- Referral Agencies: Food banks partner with various local groups (like advice centres, churches, community groups) who issue vouchers.
Citizens Advice offer advice of where to turn in a financial emergency as does gov.scot. If you are struggling with the cost of heating your home you may be entitled to a fuel voucher. Speak to your local council who can advise.
For those in Edinburgh or Glasgow these are directories on these links of all the local food support in your area.
Speak to our Financial Wellbeing Officer who can offer Money Advice and can check that you are in receipt of everything you are entitled to.
