We want to make sure our members are aware of this important step in the infected blood compensation process.
The Infected Blood Compensation Authority (IBCA) launched a registration of intent to claim service on the 09 October 2025. This service allows people to tell IBCA that they intend to make a compensation claim when the scheme asks them to do so.
It’s important to stress that this is not the compensation claim itself. Registering simply ensures that IBCA knows you want to claim and can contact you at the appropriate time. If you think you may be eligible for compensation, registering your intent is an important first step.
According to IBCA’s most recent published statistics (29 January 2026), 16,389 registrations of intent to claim have been received so far.
These include registrations from:
- People who are infected (or their representatives)
- People who are affected (or their representatives)
- People who are both infected and affected
- Representatives of estates of people who have sadly died
Registering More Than One Claim
We want to highlight that if you or your family expect to make more than one claim, each part should be registered separately.
For example:
- If you are acting as a representative of an estate of a deceased infected person and you are also an affected person in your own right, you should submit two separate registrations.
- If a family has multiple claims across different categories, each claim should have its own registration.
This helps IBCA correctly identify and progress each claim when the time comes.
Why This Matters
IBCA is in the testing phase for living infected people who were not registered to a support scheme, the estates of deceased infected people, and affected people. Their intention is to open up the service further for these categories once the testing phase has concluded. If you have not registered your intent, IBCA may not be able to reach you when your claim becomes eligible to move forward.
If you think you may be eligible, even if you are unsure, we strongly encourage you to register your intent to claim.

Important Warning: Scam Calls and Messages
With the anticipated opening of further claim categories later this year, we also want to alert members about some reports of fraudulent calls, messages and emails targeting people within the infected blood community.
Some members have been contacted by individuals falsely claiming to be from the Infected Blood Compensation Authority (IBCA), or from legal or claims firms, offering to help secure more compensation for a fee and asking for personal or financial information.
Please be aware:
- IBCA will not cold call you or ask for bank details, passwords or sensitive personal information unexpectedly.
- You do not need to use a legal firm or claims company to register your intent to claim or to be contacted by IBCA. IBCA will provide information about the free legal and financial support available to all applicants at the start of the claim process.
- Be cautious of anyone pressuring you to act quickly or requesting personal details.
If you receive suspicious contact, do not engage. End the call, keep the message, and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or Police Scotland on 101, where appropriate.
