Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Director’s Christmas Message

Alan Martin
Director

As this year draws to a close, I’d like to take the opportunity to express my gratitude to all those who have supported the organisation’s endeavours and played a part in making 2023 a success for Haemophilia Scotland.

I want to start this by thanking all the dedicated staff at haemophilia centres across Scotland for their ongoing commitment to managing the treatment of our members and for your willingness to always help our organisation when asked.  Your support for Haemophilia Scotland this year has been invaluable in promoting our events, assisting with the production of educational materials and, most significantly, responding to and helping resolve patient issues brought to your attention.

Throughout this year, members of Haemophilia Scotland have supported our initiatives in many ways. From volunteering at various events to actively participating as patient representatives in advisory boards, and even taking on physical challenges like climbing mountains or running the West Highland Way to raise funds—these efforts show the dedication and incredible generosity of our community.

In 2023, we made some significant achievements, including the launch of our Needs Assessment survey and the presentation of a strategic outline for the next 3-5 years during this year’s AGM.  Again, a heartfelt thank you goes out to the members who dedicated their time to completing the survey, playing a crucial role in identifying priorities that will shape our future strategic direction.

Looking ahead to 2024, we have a lot of work ahead of us as we launch a new calendar of events which aims to build on what we achieved this year.  Starting off with our Join the Movement program to help provide a series of virtual physio sessions to adults with bleeding disorders and then closely followed by our next Learn and Connect patient information event in Dundee.  Both programs were made possible thanks to the feedback from members and our efforts to make more services and events accessible throughout the country.  Details on the full list of events will be available on the website early in the new year.

Another exciting development in 2024 will be the recruitment of a Financial Wellbeing Officer. This new staff member will be responsible in ensuring our members are well-informed about their entitlements and provide valuable assistance throughout any application process. Considering the ongoing concerns about the cost of living, we are very confident that this new position will offer essential advice and support, benefiting all our members as we move forward.

Next year should also see a conclusion to the Infected Blood Inquiry with the publication of the final report, now expected in March 2024.  Despite the government’s continued delays, recent developments in Parliament have provided a small glimmer of hope for a positive resolution.  Haemophilia Scotland remains committed to advocating for the acceptance of the Inquiry recommendations and seeing justice for all those affected at long last.

As a final note I would like to wish everyone a joyous and peaceful festive season from all the staff, trustees and volunteers at Haemophilia Scotland. Stay safe and well and I look forward to seeing you again in 2024!

The Haemophilia Scotland office will close on Friday 22nd December and reopen on Wednesday 3rd January 2024.
