Over 50s Weekend at Dunblane Hydro

On the weekend of 23rd-24th November, Haemophilia Scotland hosted a residential event for members aged 50+ living with a bleeding disorder. Held at the picturesque Dunblane Hydro, the weekend brought together a fantastic group of individuals for learning, relaxation, and connection—all completely free for our members.

Despite having to adapt the programme due to Storm Bert, the weekend went really well. The aim of the event was to provide attendees with tools and strategies to manage life with a bleeding disorder as an older person, while also fostering connections within our community to reduce feelings of isolation.

Dr. Gráinne O’Brien joined us virtually to share her expertise on psychological coping strategies and covered a little on pain management. She also guided us through a deeply calming relaxation exercise that many participants found invaluable. Haemophilia Scotland provided updates on our Financial Wellbeing Service and facilitated an engaging discussion on attendees’ experiences with specialist haemophilia physiotherapy in Scotland.

It wasn’t all talks, though! Creativity and mindfulness were at the heart of the workshops, which included an arts session and a photography workshop. Both activities encouraged participants to step slightly out of their comfort zones while being fully accessible to individuals with varying levels of mobility. These workshops proved to be not only enjoyable but also great for relaxation and mental wellbeing.

The weekend concluded with a delicious afternoon tea—complete with doggy bags for the journey home! It was a lovely way to round off an inspiring and uplifting couple of days.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Gráinne O’Brien, Alan Martin, Alison Price, and Ciara Menzies for leading the sessions and workshops. Most importantly, we’d like to thank all of you who attended. Your enthusiasm and openness made the weekend truly special.

We’re already looking ahead to hosting a similar event in 2026! If you’re not a member yet, joining Haemophilia Scotland is easy and completely free. Don’t miss out on future opportunities—sign up today at www.haemophilia.scot/join.
