The start of December recognises National Grief Awareness week (2nd-8th December) and for many, Christmas can highlight feelings of loss, loneliness, and longing for loved ones who are no longer with us.
Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, and it doesn’t pause for festive occasions. If this Christmas feels particularly heavy, know that you are not alone. It’s okay to grieve during the holidays, to honour your feelings, and to seek support when needed.
Remember, there’s no “right” way to feel during Christmas. Be kind to yourself and take each day as it comes. Remember it is ok to not be ok.
https://letstalkaboutloss.org/, for young adults from the age of 18-35, provide virtual and face to face meet ups with others facing loss of loved ones.
Grief cafes are safe places where you can meet with others navigating loss to share your experiences with a nice cup of something hot. There are many local cafes that are pop ups, search on your local Facebook pages or council websites to find one near you.
For some, the festive period can be a time of loneliness for a variety of reasons. Bupa offer tips on tackling loneliness at this time of year.
Of course, it is not only those who are grieving who may find this time of year difficult. If you feel your mental health worsening, please do reach out to psychology support who are there to assist you.
Dr O’Brien has also created a page full of useful techniques to help cope when days are feeling tough. Mind and SAMH also offer methods to assist through the trying days.
