Unethical Research- Government Consultation

On 5th December 2024 the Cabinet Office issued a limited consultation on how they planned to apply the additional loss of autonomy award for those who had been subject to unethical research.

They proposed basically that eligibility should be limited to:

  • unethical research between 1974 and 1984 which was related to:
  • the Haemophilia Centres in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Oxford, the Royal Free in London and the work of a Dr Craske.

The value of the additional payment is proposed as £10,000 (or £15,000 for children who had attended Treloar School).

We have submitted a response today which identifies serious failings in the approach proposed by government.  You can read the consultation here and our response here.

We are writing further to the Minister responsible about the value the award proposed and asking for an explanation of how the figures were decided.
