Closure of Infected Blood Inquiry

Yesterday (31 March 2026) marked the formal closing of the Infected Blood Inquiry, bringing to an end over seven years of tireless work to uncover the truth about the use of contaminated blood products in the UK and the devastating impact this has had, and continues to have, on so many people.

The Chair of the Inquiry has written to the Minister for the Cabinet Office to confirm that the Inquiry has now fulfilled its terms of reference, while also making clear that the work must not end here and that the Government has an ongoing responsibility to act on its findings. You can read Sir Brian’s letter to the Minister here.

Since opening in 2018, the Infected Blood Inquiry provided a trusted and compassionate space for infected and affected people to share their experiences and ensured the impact on them and their families was properly recognised. For many, this was the first time their voices were truly heard.

The Inquiry’s recommendations, set out across its three published reports, led to the creation of the Infected Blood Compensation Scheme, alongside a range of important recommendations aimed at improving the treatment and safety of patients.

On behalf of our community, Haemophilia Scotland would like to express our sincere thanks to the Inquiry team and to its Chair, Sir Brian Langstaff, for their dedication and commitment to uncovering the truth and championing the cause of those infected and affected. Their work marked a landmark step towards justice, recognition, and accountability.
