Clive Smith, Chair of the UK Infected Blood Memorial Committee has announced that applications for membership of the Memorial Committee are now invited.
The Memorial Committee has been established in response to recommendations made by the Infected Blood Inquiry on recognising and remembering what happened to people impacted by the infected blood scandal. It recommended that:
- a permanent memorial be established in the UK, and that consideration be given to memorials in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland;
- there should be a memorial dedicated to the children infected at Treloar’s school; and,
- At least three commemorative events are held, approximately six months apart, drawing together those infected and affected.
The Committee will oversee the above work and will comprise representatives of the infected and affected. Details of the role of members of the committee and the application process can be found here.
Applications are welcome from people who have been infected or affected by the infected blood scandal. There is keenness to ensure that the breadth of the community is represented on the Committee as well as there being a geographic spread across the UK.
Clive would be happy to speak to anyone who is considering applying if they would like to find out more details of the role. He can be contacted via the e-mail address below.
The Chair anticipates announcing the Vice Chair of the Committee very shortly and the Chair and Vice Chair will then commence interviews for the rest of the Committee.
It is hoped that the Committee will be in place by the first Memorial event in November at Church House, giving the community an opportunity to meet with and speak to the new Committee.
Applications in the form of a written statement of not more that 500 words should be submitted with contact details to ibmemorialisation@cabinetoffice.gov.uk by no later than Sunday, 5th October 2025.
